Slant Fin Humidifier Maintenance

If you are going to invest in a slant fin humidifier then keeping the unit clean is important in order to ensure that the humidifier works properly.

Many different kinds of portable humidifiers require regular cleaning in order to reduce the risk of bacterial growth and to remove any residue that is caused by scales.

The removal of scale residue on a slant fin humidifier will make sure that the unit is performing to its optimum potential.

The correct way to clean a slant fin humidifier is not a difficult task; the following information are some general tips that you can follow to make sure that your slant fin humidifier is being properly cleaned.

One important tip that I have for you is to make sure that you refer to the product manual for specific care recommendations by the manufacturer and for important information on the type of filters or wicks that are required for the slant fin humidifier. This information will let you know whether or not the components are washable and approximately how often you should replace them.

The product manual will also include what solution should be used to clean the base of the slant fin humidifier as well as the reservoir. In case there are not specific instructions included with the unit, the following guidelines should be followed.

  • Before you do anything, make sure that you turn your slant fin humidifier off and unplug the unit before you start to take it apart to start the cleaning process.
  • Remove the water reservoir and fill the tank until it is approximately 2/3 full of water; add 1 tablespoon of chlorine bleach to the water and let the combination sit for twenty minutes. To make sure that the corners of the tank also get clean, you can move the solution in the reservoir around. Once you have completed this step, empty and rinse several times in order to remove all chlorine from the tank.
  • Next, remove the filter or wick and if these are washable, immerse the component in a sink of cool water, or rinse under cool running water. Keep in mind that these particular aspects of a slant fin humidifier do require replacing, so always inspect the condition each time you clean the humidifier.
  • Check the base of the slant fin humidifier for any water residue that may have been left behind. To easily clean the base of the unit, add clear undiluted vinegar and let this stand for about twenty minutes. Once the time is up, drain the vinegar, add water to rinse, drain once again and wipe clean.
  • Wipe down the outside of your slant fin humidifier with a warm water/vinegar cloth to get rid of any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on the outside of the humidifier. You can also use a solution that is half water and half bleach to clean the slant fin humidifier, but this will leave an odor behind on the unit.
  • If you are not operating your slant fin humidifier for a few days, drain off any water, clean it and dry completely before storing. Do not allow water to remain in the unit as this can be the perfect breeding ground for a variety of molds and foreign bacteria.
  • Finally, do not add salt or any other foreign substances to the water reservoir of your slant fin humidifier. If it is not listed in the owner’s manual, it should not be used! You want to avoid causing irreversible damage to your unit by adhering to what is recommended by the manufacturer.

If you take good care of your slant fin humidifier, it will take good care of you and other members of your family!
